Token Ring Bridge - Frequently Asked Questions


Issue: The Red Error LED is always on.

Check that your cable works and that the port on your MAU works

Check the jumper settings are correct inside the bridge, consult page 7 for details.

Unplug any devices from the Ethernet side, leaving the Token Ring side connected to the MAU and power cycle the bridge, When the error LED goes out, connect the Ethernet device.

Note: If you power up the bridge(by connecting the power connector) without the Token Ring cable plugged into a working MAU the bridge may only try for a few seconds to insert into the Ring and then the red error light will remain on even after you have connected the Token Ring cable. To recover unplug any devices from the Ethernet side, leaving the Token Ring side connected to the MAU and power cycle the bridge, When the error LED goes out, connect the Ethernet device.


Issue: I cannot ping the Ethernet device I have connected to.

Check the Error LED is not lit, If it is Follow the steps above.

Check the amber light on the Ethernet side is lit. If not ensure the Ethernet device is powered on and that your cable is working correctly.

Check that you have only connected to one Ethernet device.

Ensure you have a fixed IP address in the Ethernet device and that you are pinging the correct address

Check the IP address on the Ethernet unit has not changed. If it has power down the Ethernet device, power down the Tokenring bridge. Reboot the Tokenring bridge, reboot the Ethernet device once the Tokenring bridge has connected to the Tokenring network


Issue: The device is connected correctly but sometimes I lose data / the data transfer is slow.

Check that the Ethernet device you have connected to supports IP fragmentation. If not contact the Ethernet device vendor or set the Maximum Packet Transmit size on the Tokenring devices to 1400bytes.

Check that the packets being sent are TCP/IP only for 00-03-0328-2450 or TCP/IP and SPX/IPX for 00-03-0328-2451.
